About

Gold Coast Animal Hospital has seen many changes throughout the years. Our hospital, originally known as Lake Shore Animal Hospital, was built by a woman, Florence Fitzgerald in the early 1960′s. Ms. Fitzgerald envisioned a state of the art animal hospital, and for an astounding 1.5 million dollars, built the only veterinary clinic in Illinois that measured up to human hospital standards. Dr. Lloyd Prasuhn was hand picked to run the most advanced veterinary hospital of the day. From 1961 until 1988, Dr. Prasuhn hosted instructors from various schools of veterinary medicine. These professors instructed the veterinarians of Lake Shore Animal Hospital in surgery, oncology, and internal medicine. While the hospital cared for the pets of the rich and famous such as Hugh Hefner and Mayor Richard J. Daley, Dr. Prasuhn also held vaccine clinics for the poor of the area.

Dr. Harold F. Reece, came to Lake Shore in the Spring of 1968 to complete his preceptorship as a fourth year veterinary student. Upon his graduation from Auburn’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Reece worked one year full time for Dr. Prasuhn. In 1969, Dr. Reece began to work at Palos Animal Hospital, a clinic he would later own. However, for five years, Dr. Reece returned to Lake Shore weekly, to pursue one his passions in veterinary medicine, surgery.

Upon Dr. Prasuhn’s death in 1988, our animal hospital was closed for one year. In 1989, Dr. James Work purchased the hospital. Under his ownership, the hospital became known as the Animal Medical Associates. In 1997, Dr. Work bought a veterinary hospital in Wisconsin, and moved, in order to run his new clinic. Ms. Fitzgerald, the builder of the clinic, introduced Dr. Work to Dr. Reece, and in 1997, Dr. Reece, coming full circle, was once again at 225 W Division Street, this time, as the owner of the practice. Shortly after taking ownership, the hospital once again underwent a name change, this time to Gold Coast Animal Hospital.
